Charities

Please remember, this entire trip is done for charity. If 100 of you sponsor us 0.1p per 10 miles, we’ll reach our target! That doesn’t sound like a lot, does it? Read about some of our causes below.

Cambridge Mongolian Disaster Appeal (CAMDA)

Taken from the CAMDA website:

For a small charity we have a long reach. With just a few entirely voluntary members, our aid effort stretches several thousand miles to remote areas of Mongolia. Our projects there span many hundreds of square kms, from Khenti, to Bulgan, Selenge and Khuvsgul in the north, to Dundgobi on the desert fringe in the south. Our aid ranges from provision of grass cutting machinery, to well-refurbishment, and veterinary aid for horses and camels.

During more than six years of fund raising CAMDA has helped meet the needs of thousands of nomadic herding families, with projects specific to their way of life. First, during the catastrophic dzuds of 2000-2003 with emergency fodder, followed by inoculations of camel and horse herds that were left in poor condition. From late 2003 onwards, these projects were extended as it became apparent that small-scale herders over wide areas were still in need of this kind of grass-roots help.

Increasingly we are looking to fundraising events that are helping us maintain our work in the field, spread across the projects that are our ongoing objectives in helping Mongolian nomads.

Anthony Nolan Trust:

Taken from www.anthonynolan.org.uk

The Anthony Nolan Trust takes back lives from leukaemia by providing lifesaving donors for patients in need of a bone marrow transplant. Since 1974 they have helped to give over 5,800 children and adults a new chance of life. During our lifetimes, one in three of us will be diagnosed with some form of cancer, and as of today, not a lot of them have cures. With leukaemia, however, there is a cure- a bone marrow transplant from a suitable donor.

The ANT maintains a national bone marrow register of potential donors, and helps find people in need of a bone marrow transplant a perfect match. They find potential donors at donor recruitment clinics. They are also pioneering better techniques and researching improvements.

It costs about £70 to add one person to the register. In order to find a match, donors and their medical team have to search through hundreds of potential donors in order to find a suitable match- the chances of finding a match are pretty low. A lot of money is needed in order to establish a large enough database to improve the chances of finding a single suitable match. This is where you come in- donate as little or as much as you can, and the money will be used to maintain and enlarge this register. Go on, help save a life. You know you want to.

Children’s Development Protection Fund:

The Children’s Development and Protection Fund (CDPF) was originally established in 2001 under the name “nature, environment and social welfare centre” dedicated to providing activities for communities.

Goal

The main goal of the CDPF is to provide a number of essential programmes and activities to support children and youth in difficult circumstances. The Foundation works for children in Mongolia who suffer from poverty, disease, injustice and violence.

We are also looking at supporting a charity closer to home in the UK. More details to come!
